RCI Executive Director speaks about the Sex Offenders’ Register on Prime Time

“The least a survivor can expect, having gone through the justice system, is that they will be protected from that perpetrator forever,” our Executive Director, Dr Clíona Saidléar, said on Prime Time on 20th February 2025 when asked her view of the Sex Offenders’ Register.

“They should be confident that that perpetrator has a system of monitoring and controls around them that ensures their safety,” she continued. “The wider question, of course, is that the whole of society is protected from that person who has proven themselves to be a risk.”

Dr Saidléar went on to say that the majority of people committing sexual violence crimes are in our communities and unknown to us. “As a community, we need to do our piece in creating safety,” she said.

She concluded by saying she would like to see the Sex Offenders’ Register include people convicted of coercive control.

If you missed the interview, you can watch it back on RTÉ Player (starting 29 minutes into the programme).
